Hailed as the “Carmen of our time,” she was chosen to lead the cast of Bizet’s immortal masterpiece in no less than eight international productions in one season. Her most recent performances included the Metropolitan Opera in New York, directed by Carrie Cracknell, known for her work on Netflix's ‘Persuasion’. She became the youngest to take on this role on this stage. Aigul's forthcoming album features a portrait of her famed Carmen and other operatic arias, including a specially arranged folk song from her Ural Mountains home.

At the age of 27 Aigul has already etched her name in history as the youngest artist ever to take on the title role of Bizet’s Carmen at the Royal Opera in London. The mezzo-soprano is now back in the iconic role at London’s Royal Opera House and that propelled her to fame, and once again lauded by critics: “This is a Carmen who will be talked about for many years to come” ( – The Times), “Aigul Akhmetshina is electrifying’ ( – The Guardian) where she “quite wonderfully and subtly sung with a dusky tone and focussed line, lifting the rhythms in a way that makes the dance-based numbers spring to life” (The Telegraph).
