Award-winning pianist David Korevaar has released the much anticipated 2-CD set Beethoven Piano Sonatas: Heroic to Hammerklavier on Prospero Classical (0111). CD 1 includes Sonata in C major, Op. 53, “Waldstein”; Andante Favori, WoO 57; Sonata in F major, Op. 54; and Sonata in F minor, Op. 57, “Appassionata.” CD 2 includes the two Sonatas for Hammerklavier, Op. 101 in A major and Op. 106 in B-flat major. The project was launched in November 2024 with releases on Spotify. The 2-CD set will be followed by a series of online-only releases of the rest of Beethoven's piano sonatas throughout 2025 as follows:

Early reviews by the international publication Pizzicato praise Korevaar’s performance saying “One is immediately struck by the clear and fluid playing. His sonatas have a pronounced motoric quality, they are suggestive, and the music always strives toward the finale...The tension is hardly ever released, and the ear is constantly surprised by textures made immensely attractive by the transparency. ...In the Hammerklavier Sonata, the American pianist shows how stylistically confident he is in capturing the universal character of this music without treading well-trodden paths. Beethoven’s ‘breath of freedom’ is well expressed in a balanced and rhetorically exciting interpretation.”

Korevaar crafted the idea for his Beethoven complete Sonata project during COVID 19. With his scheduled in person performances cancelled due to the Pandemic, he searched for a unique alternative to celebrate the composer's 250th birthday, embracing the virtual recital format. Recording from his living room, while social distancing and with minimal equipment, Korevaar set himself a personal challenge to perform, record, and share all 32 Beethoven Sonatas in 60 days. Forty-one days into the project, Korevaar met his goal of posting YouTube recordings of all 32 Beethoven Piano Sonatas. While that project quickly garnered thousands of views, the recordings were made under the limitations of no piano tuner and minimal production.

About the current recording, Korevaar says, “My many years of work teaching and playing these works has brought me to a place where I feel compelled to share my interpretations more broadly, and with better sonics and clarity than I could achieve in a live performance. While there are many amazing recordings of complete Beethoven cycles out there already, I think that I have something to add and I am excited to share these performances with listeners everywhere.”
