On From Hungary to Taiwan, the Formosa Quartet compress the 5,500-mile trek from Budapest to Taipei into a breezy, hour-and-23-minute survey of the countries' respective folk traditions. Three of the album's four pieces - Dana Wilson's Hungarian Folk Songs, Wei-Chieh Lin's Five Taiwanese Folk Songs and Lei Liang's Song Recollections - were commissioned for the project and, like the fourth, Bartók's String Quartet No. 4, inflect age-old melodies with a modern sense of the string quartet's textural possibilities. Available on Arkivmusic.
