Gunther Groissbock: Bio

Austrian bass Günther Groissböck makes his Royal Opera debut in the 2018/19 Season as Fasolt (Das Rheingold).

He studied singing at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, first with Robert Holl and later with José van Dam. He is a regular guest at leading houses worldwide, such as the Metropolitan Opera, New York, La Scala, Milan, Bavarian State Opera, Vienna State Opera, Paris Opéra and the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Salzburg and Bayreuth festivals. His operatic repertory includes Baron Ochs (Der Rosenkavalier), Boris Godunov, Fasolt, Hunding (Die Walküre), Landgraf Herrmann (Tannhäuser), Veit Pogner (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), King Marke (Tristan und Isolde), Gurnemanz (Parsifal), King Heinrich (Lohengrin), Daland (Der fliegende Holländer), Caspar (Der Freischüt), Vodník (Rusalka), Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte) and Rocco (Fidelio).

Groissböck is also an active concert artist, performing at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, the Munich and Berlin Philharmonies, the Vienna Musikverein and Konzerthaus, Carnegie Hall and Boston's Symphony Hall. He has collaborated with conductors including Philippe Jordan, James Levine, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Zubin Mehta, John Eliot Gardiner, Antonio Pappano, Kirill Petrenko and Andris Nelsons. His latest DVD releases include Der Rosenkavalier from Salzburg and from the Metropolitan Opera (2017) and Beethoven's Symphony no.9 with Philippe Jordan. He also appears on several CDs, including Das Rheingold and Lohengrin with Marek Janowski, Mahler's Symphony no.8 and Bruckner's Mass no.3. As an exclusive DECCA Classic recording artist, he released a double album of Schubert's Winterreise and Schwanengesang.

Known for his increasing presence at leading classical venues the world over, from opera engagements at the MET and the Staatsoper Berlin to concert appearances at Boston Symphony Hall and Vienna's Musikverein, bass Günther Groissböck releases his second album on Decca, Herz-Tod ("Heart-Death").
