John Weber :

The Banks Of Skibbereen

From very serious and melancholy songs, to whimsical, clever, happy and bawdy songs. He is not hindered by writing in any one genre, but writes songs in whatever form or style that inspires him. John’s first, self-produced EP album, The Banks Of Skibbereen, is a collection of seven all new Irish Pub songs that were inspired by a tour through Ireland. John fell in love with the country, the people and their beautiful Irish accents. Inspired by his wonderful experiences in Ireland,
John began penning lyrics to Irish style Pub songs he wished he had heard in the Irish Pubs. The result is his debut album, The Banks Of Skibbereen. Check out the songs and upcoming videos at JohnsCoolTunes.com.

Here's a Tracks Rundown

1. An Irish Drinking Song: This song is about adult singles looking for love and romance in the (Irish) Pubs.  On a trip to Ireland, my wife and I noticed the Irish Pubs were very similar to the bars in America, filled with a younger crowd and listening to current Rock and Roll Music.  We observed a lot of single people in the Pubs and watched them participate in the normal flirting practices that take place in such establishments worldwide.   I came up with Idea while driving home from attending a musical event in Los Angeles, California.  My wife and I worked together on the song and had most of it written by the time we arrived home. It is a jaunty and somewhat bawdy song about looking for love, romance and sex.

2. The Devil’s In The Whiskey: This song is about a gentleman who is addicted to his whiskey and is unaffected by all the negative effects of drinking too much.  He knows the “Devil’s” in the whiskey but he receives so much pleasure from the drinking, that he does not care about the negative consequences of such an addiction.

3. The Banks Of Skibbereen: The concept for this song occurred to me after a tour of Ireland. At several of the stops we made in small towns, I observed war memorials to the soldiers from that town who had lost their lives defending their country, and the world, in either World War I or World War II.  This old style, traditional Irish story song is about a boy growing up along the banks of River Ilen in Skibbereen.  It is about his hardships, his love and happiness with his new family, then going off the war (WW I).  At the end of the song, he comes to understand the meaning of life and the true cost of doing one’s duty.

4. Donnybrooks: This song is a good natured, funny song about some patrons of a local, sub-par Pub and how they can start a fight (Donnybrook) after all their drinking, to avoid having to pay their bar tab.

5. The Derry Air: Funny story, This song started out to be a silly, bawdy song titled “Smell Her Derry Air.”  However, my wife created such a lovely melody for this song, I had to change the lyrics to hopefully match the beauty of her melody.  It is now about a world traveler who has visited most countries of the world but longs to return to his childhood home in Derry (Londonderry). He reminisces about all the lovely smells and joys he experienced as a boy and cannot wait to return to Derry.

6.  Happy Fookin’ Birthday: This song turns the tables on the “birthday boy” and challenges him to buy all the rounds of beers for the friends who came out to the Pub to celebrate his birthday.

7. The House Of Miss Maggie Malone: This bawdy song is about a fairly posh Pub which incidentally happens to be connected to a brothel next door, both are owned by Miss Maggie Malone.  This fact is commonly known by all the towns people but the men who patronize the Pub pretend they are there just for the drinks and camaraderie of the Pub’s atmosphere.
