Interview with KPR's Michael Keelan

Joyce DiDonato took the old Italian songs and arias sung by every aspiring classical student as the basis for her new album, Songplay. Her all-star team of musicians arranged the songs in jazz and samba styles. She intersperses those with show tunes and jazz standards of our own time. The 14 tracks succeed in being simultaneously familiar and unexpected, and the album serves up music by Vivaldi in both its customary Baroque purity and swinging to the heady rhythm of a samba. It brings a tango sizzle to an aria by Vivaldi's contemporary Marcello, and it plays with the voice of Bach in George Shearing's ‘Lullaby of Birdland'.

Kansas Public Radio's Michael Keelan talked with her about the album and her roles in the upcoming Metropolitan Opera season. LISTEN TO THE INTERVIEW
