Lili Boulanger - Fragments

What happens when some of the most creative talents of the electronic music scene are invited to reimagine classical works by a composer from the past? With this question in mind Deutsche Grammophon started Fragments in 2022 with tracks by Erik Satie. Two years later, Fragments now releases the second episode and lets thirteen innovative and versatile artists work with Lili Boulanger’s most intriguing tracks. Starting in February 2024 with the first eSingle and releasing the full album in September 2024.

Following the enormously positive response on the debut episode, Fragments now again focuses on a wide spread of musical directions and perspectives. With Lili Boulanger, the project chose a young female composer, that was heavily influenced by her youth in times of war and political instability, as well as living the typical life of a young person existing in an atmosphere of dreams, hope and lightness.

ECM New Series 1275                                 LP: 0422 8177641 0                      Release: 6 September 2024

Vinyl reissue in facsimile gatefold edition, includes original liner notes in enclosed booklet

In 1984, ECM brought a new sound into the musical world with the release of Arvo Pärt’s Tabula rasa, the first album on the label’s New Series imprint.

As Paul Griffiths wrote in his liner notes for a 2010 special-edition produced in collaboration with the composer’s publisher Universal Edition : “This was the beginning, also, of an extraordinary association between composer and record producer, an example of loyalty and collegiality unique in our time. Pärt’s mature career is documented on ECM albums produced by Eicher (…) If Pärt gave ECM one of its enduring foci, ECM gave Pärt a forum he could not otherwise have found.”

Now, on the occasion of the 40th New Series anniversary, this gatefold vinyl reissue with enclosed booklet presents the record in its original guise. The record also marked the intersection of some of the most longstanding, significant musical collaborators in the label’s history: Arvo Pärt, Gidon Kremer and Keith Jarrett.

Wagner - Parsifal, Bayreuther Festspielhaus,Casado

Deutsche Grammophon is delighted to announce the latest fruit of its global media partnership with the Bayreuth Festival: Jay Scheib’s acclaimed and groundbreaking new production of Parsifal. His staging, which incorporated AR (augmented reality) visuals, was premiered at the Festspielhaus on 25 July 2023 and received its international online premiere on DG’s STAGE+ platform a day later. Making her Bayreuth debut, DG artist Elina Garanca starred as Kundry opposite Andreas Schager in the title role. The production was conducted by Pablo Heras-Casado, enjoying his own “triumphant debut” (BR-KLASSIK) at the Festspielhaus.

For the first time since becoming the Festival’s exclusive audiovisual partner in 2015, DG will present both audio and video recordings of the opera. The latter (2 Blu-rays) offers three sound formats, including Dolby Atmos, and comes with a booklet with full details about the work and production. Even without the AR elements that were available to some members of the Bayreuth audience, the filmed version offers viewers a breathtaking audiovisual experience. The audio recording, which includes a second booklet containing the full German libretto and an English translation, will be available digitally and as a 4-CD set. Both versions will be released on 28 June 2024, while the Prelude to Act Three and Kundry’s aria “Ich sah das Kind an seiner Mutter Brust” will be issued as digital taster tracks on 31 May and 14 June respectively.

Schubert Die Freunde von Salamanka' w/ARV

Of the ten stage compositions Schubert completed, only two were performed during his lifetime. And even today, his musico-dramatic works tend to be overshadowed by his songs, chamber music and symphonies. However, anyone who gets involved with Schubert's operas will discover an unknown world of musical treasures and wonders. In the opera fragment "Der Spiegelritter", the highly ambitious 14-year-old Schubert sends his knight Almador into a magical kingdom inhabited by magicians and enchanted princesses, and takes the libretto, originally intended as a parody, in a touchingly serious manner. While the opera seria of Christoph Willibald Gluck still resonates here, in "Die Freunde von Salamanka" we are musically immersed in the cheerful world of the German Singspiel: with the help of his friends, young Alonso ultimately succeeds in eliminating his noble rival for the beautiful and rich Countess Olivia.

The recording from the Schubertiade Hohenems in 1978 is now available for the first time on digital streaming and download portals. Singers such as Hermann Prey, Edith Mathis, Kurt Rydl and Robert Holl as well as the Chorus and Orchestra of the Austrian Radio, Vienna, conducted by Theodor Guschlbauer are a cast that Schubert could hardly have wished for better. The original LP artwork with an essay by Schubert editor Walther Dürr and the libretti in German and English are available to download from the Deutsche Grammophon website.

Live at WOMAD 1982

On 29 July 2022, WOMAD and Real World Records will celebrate the 40th anniversary of a landmark cultural moment with the release of the double album Live at WOMAD 1982. Featuring performances by Echo and the Bunnymen, Peter Gabriel, Simple Minds, The Beat, The Drummers of Burundi, The Musicians of the Nile, Salsa de Hoy and many more, this recording of the very first WOMAD festival reflects an unrivalled diversity of music programming which has become the festival’s signature over the four decades which have followed.

In July 1982, the Royal Bath and West Showground near Shepton Mallet, Somerset was the chosen location for what the organisers called ‘a World of Music, Arts and Dance’ (WOMAD for short) — 5 stages, with 60 bands from over 20 countries. The intention behind the festival was to acknowledge the influence of non-Western music on successful Western bands and musicians, and to create a wider audience for that music by combining both in the same event — a festival celebrating music as a universal language.

Storytellers On Verbier Festival Gold

Verbier Festival Gold's first release of 2023 is based on the concept of storytelling, a theme that is central to many of the festival’s performances. This offering pairs two tantalizing performances from the very first summers of the organization's history. First, Peter Ustinov narrates Jean de Brunhoff's iconic tale "L'Histoire de Babar, le petit éléphant". Charming piano accompaniment by Poulenc, played by Roger Vignoles, serves as a backdrop to the text. Second, world-renowned soprano Barbara Hendricks is joined by Carmina Quartet for a stunning rendition of Fauré's “La Bonne Chanson”. The gorgeous poems of Paul Verlaine unfold their very own charm in Hendrick's interpretation.
