Baroque Divas highlights the artistry and élan of four of today's leading prima donnas. Mezzo-sopranos Vivica Genaux, Sonia Prina and Mary-Ellen Nesi and contralto Romina Basso are joined by the acclaimed Greek period-instrument orchestra Anima Atenea and conductor George Petrou for a program of sensational arias, many of them new to disc. Decca's latest album evokes the passion, emotional fire and white-hot rivalry that turned Baroque opera into one of the most exciting entertainments imaginable. Baroque Divas includes arias by Veracini, Hasse and Bononcini and melodies by Vivaldi, Vinci and Gluck. Its repertoire taps into the energy of works specially written for the legendary singers Faustina Bordoni and Francesca Cuzzoni, the so-called ‘Rival Queens', whose virtuosity inflamed opposing groups of fans and inspired the greatest composers of the age. It also contains arias created for the superstar castratos Farinelli and Caffarelli and other top performers of the age.
