Dreamweaver

Norwegian composer and pianist Ola Gjeilo announces the release of his choral album, ‘Dreamweaver’ via Decca Classics, featuring several world premiere recordings. Gjeilo is one of the most frequently performed composers in the world, his previous albums having garnered over 170 million streams, and with his recent solo piano releases, his global streams have surpassed 230 million. This album marks Gjeilo's first venture into choral music in over six years, since ‘Winter Songs’, described as an “release of heavenly, bewitching, eternal new choral music for our time” * and it was praised by pop singer Ellie Goulding, who even chose his music to be performed at her wedding back in 2019.

In this new album built around two new multi-movement works titled ‘The Road’ and ‘Dreamweaver’, Gjeilo pays homage to his home country of Norway. The centrepiece of the album, ‘Dreamweaver’ is inspired by one of the best known Norwegian medieval folk poems, Draumkvedet. The album features soprano soloist Grace Davidson, texts by Charles Anthony Silvestri, and showcases Gjeilo's versatility as it also includes instrumental and solo piano tracks: ‘I love that contrast, between the intimacy of solo piano and the bigger sound world with choir.’ (Ola Gjeilo)

Dawn

Dawn, the follow-up to Ola Gjeilo’s hugely successful 2020 album Night, will be released by Decca Classics today.

Gjeilo is best known for his compositions for choir and is one of the most frequently performed choral composers alive. That success has quickly translated to his work for solo piano. Dawn is the natural successor to 2020’s Night which was inspired by the twilight hours of his hometown of New York and has amassed over 50 million streams to date.

Raised listening to an eclectic mix of classical, jazz, pop and folk, and classically trained at The Julliard School and the Royal College of Music London, Gjeilo’s distinctive soundworld is often described as cinematic and evocative, lush and harmonious.

Improvisation has long been at the core of Gjeilo’s composition and performance, and that is clearly heard in his meditative, soothing work for solo piano.

As the release of Dawn is announced, Gjeilo says, "I'm excited to share my new piano album with you. It was written across a year on the West Coast and is inspired by the peaceful light and stillness at dawn."

Ola Gjeilo:

Night

Norwegian composer and pianist Ola Gjeilo presents a stunning collection of brand-new original works for solo piano, composed and performed by Gjeilo himself. NIGHT is an intimate and meditative collection of peaceful piano music, inspired by the twilight hours in the place he now calls home – New York City.

Gjeilo's musical style is often described as cinematic and evocative, characterised by warm harmonies, flowing melodies and gently rocking, repeated figures. He is an exclusive Decca Classics recording artist, and the new album follows the highly successful Winter Songs (2017) and Ola Gjeilo (2016), which also feature Tenebrae, Voces8 and the Choir of Royal Holloway. NIGHT is his first solo piano album to be released on Decca.

Gjeilo is one of the most frequently performed composers in the choral world. He grew up outside Oslo, Norway in a musically eclectic home listening to classical, jazz, pop and folk, a broad background he later incorporated into his classical composition studies at The Juilliard School and the Royal College of Music in London.
