Her voice is deep, rich and capable of raising goosebumps, dance moves and tears. Her songs range from wistful, slow-tempo ballads of personal journeys to roadhouse country rock. It's why Carpenter is one of only 15 ...

Mary Chapin Carpenter@Barbican. Every note was exquisite / Financial Times
If the magazines that celebrate a certain vision of country life - all just-so throws on the sofa, the perfect picture window view over rolling hills, a Labrador curled on the floor - had a soundtrack, it might well be the band that Mary Chapin Carpenter brought to the Barbican. Every note she and her guitarist, drummer and pianist played was exquisite, her songs reconfigured with gentle, subtle arrangem...

MCC & Tift - The other side of Americana / The Sydney Morning Herald
One: That it stinks. Because if Mary Chapin Carpenter was male, Texan, and had a substance issue in her past, she'd be legendary, lauded and filling this place twice over, instead of operating on the alt-country/Americana fringe since her Grammy-winning years in the mid-'90s. And her friend Tift Merritt would be the much talked about acolyte and torchbearer bringing something soulful to the mix i...

After spending much of a year in isolation booths, connected to nearly 90 musicians via closed-circuit cameras, and singing precisely when an experienced classical conductor told her to, singer-songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter is down to a trio. Mary Chapin Carpenter reconfigures her career with 'Movies' / NewsOK
Writing a song is like building a house. The same key elements - a firm foundation, easily accessible entry points and a bright, inviting exterior - are as essential for a sturdy, well-built song as they are a family's home. When the years have passed and the home needs some sprucing up or, maybe, the residents just want to see something different, it's as simple as applying a fresh coat of paint, adding...

Mary Chapin Carpenter: how sad songs make us brave / The Salt Lake Tribune interview
Singing with an orchestra - a great feeling - is like riding an enormous wave of sound, says singer/songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter. "You don't want to oversing," she says. Working with composer Vince Mendoza changed the way the singer heard h...
Mary Chapin Carpenter / Big Think interview
Mary Chapin Carpenter has won five Grammys, but she still can't give you a formula for how to write a song.
