"I need to do this," says singer Mike "Maz" Maher. "It's part of my personality. I have to be able to write and record and do my own thing." Maz is talking about his ambitious solo debut Idealist, out October 14th on GroundUP Music/Verve Label Group. The album is a showcase for the Snarky Puppy member's thoughtful songwriting and honeyed vocals. Although a performing musician since the age of 12 and equally adroit on the trumpet, guitar and drums, Maz stuck to vocals during the recording ofIdealist. "My voice is my instrument here," he says. "Otherwise, I used the guys from Snarky Puppy because I know what those guys can do and what they're capable of. The same was true of the other musicians-I had heard Philip Sterk play with Bob Lanzetti's group, and he has a great sound on pedal steel. Melissa McMillan and Shayna Steele can give you basically every timbre you would want from a female voice between the two of them. I think they are an essential part of the sound of this record."
