Perrachio,Castelnuovo-Tedesco Piano Piano Quintets

David Korevaar’s recording with the Carpe Diem String Quartet of Piano Quintets by Luigi Perrachio and Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco is now available (Da Vinci Classics Coo697). The album features the world premiere recording of Luigi Perrachio’s Quintet for 2 Violins, Viola, Cello and Piano (1919) and Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Quintet No. 1 in F Major for 2 Violins, Viola, Cello and Piano Op. 69 (1932).

Korevaar discovered the original, unpublished manuscript of Perrachio’s Quintet in Turin, Italy at the Conservatorio G Verdi as part of his extensive research into the works of the composer. Korevaar’s expertise and knowledge of Perrachio is reflected in the liner notes for this release which he authored. The Quintet has now been published by Da Vinci Press under his supervision.

Award-winning pianist David Korevaar and the brilliant Carpe Diem Quartet have a long collaborative history. They celebrated the modern premiere of this long-lost work in the summer of 2021. “Bringing this music to life for the first time since its premiere has been a privilege,” says Korevaar. This album follows on the success of Korevaar’s highly acclaimed disc of world premiere recordings of piano music by the Luigi Perrachio of 9 Little Poems & 25 Preludes (MSR 1710). In reviewing the earlier disc Gramophone exclaimed “Kudos to David Korevaar for bringing Perrachio’s inventive and pianistically resourceful piano music to light and playing it so wonderfully well,” and notes that “none of the piano works on this disc had been recorded before David Korevaar wrapped his enterprising and skillful hands around them, lavishing the utmost in loving care upon each and every piece.”

Lowell Liebermann - Piano Music Volume 3

The third volume in David Korevaar's highly acclaimed series devoted to Lowell Liebermann's solo piano music (MSR Classics MS1688) continues his journey of recording all of Liebermann's works for the piano.  This release features each of Liebermann's original works for solo piano composed between 2001 and 2017, including world premiere recordings of his Nocturne No. 8, Op. 85; Nocturne No. 9, Op. 97; Nocturne No. 10, Op. 99; and Nocturne No. 11, Op. 112. Additional works include his Piano Sonata No. 3, Op. 82; Schubert Variations, Op. 100; and 2 Impromptus, Op. 131.

Gramophone lavishes praise on Korevaar's interpretation of Liebermann's music declaring, "Needless to say, one needs boundless resources of technique, tone, color, and musical imagination to do Liebermann's keyboard aesthetic justice. David Korevaar possesses these qualities in spades and manages to create an individual character with each selection. Both the present disc and Korevaar's two earlier Liebermann volumes brilliantly reflect this pianist's probing individuality and firm commitment to the material."  MusicWeb International said, "What makes the disc especially notable is the exceptional pianism of David Korevaar. After listening to his interpretation of these Liebermann works, I can't imagine significantly better performances."

Luigi Perrachio, Nove Poemetti | 25 Preludi

David Korevaar's world premiere recording of piano music by Italian impressionist composer Luigi Perrachio (1883-1966) is now available (MSR Classics MS1710). The two works on the album, recorded for the first time, are Nove Poemetti (Nine Little Poems,1917/1920) and 25 Preludi (25 Preludes, 1927).

Composer Luigi Perrachio's music is largely unknown. Having only published a small fraction of his work, he had a reputation for undue modesty. Korevaar says, "this is wonderful music, composed by a man with a distinctive and beautiful compositional voice and a mastery of the piano that comes through in vivid and colorful writing." The recording was recognized by Gramophone saying "the brilliant David Korevaar gives intelligent, thoughtful and dynamic performances of piano pieces by Luigi Perrachio – bringing this delightful assured music to a much wider audience." Fanfare calls the disc "a major addition to the catalog; in fact, it is nothing short of revelatory. Luigi Perracchio could hardly ask for a better interpreter. One fervently hopes this opens the door to more recordings of Perrachio's music."

Joshua Kozman, in a review for the San Francisco Chronical describes the Nove Poemetti as "a garland of short character sketches, each one with a specific poetic inspiration; the echoes of Debussy that run throughout are both the charm and the limitation of the set" and the Preludi as "a march through the major and minor keys that plays like a gnarled, tender gloss on Chopin's Op. 28."
