Grigory Sokolov:

Purcell & Mozart

The recital tours of Grigory Sokolov have become the stuff of legend. Even though his programmes are often shrouded in mystery until the last minute, audiences flock to hear him perform, knowing that, whatever the repertoire, they are guaranteed a thrilling musical experience. While Sokolov no longer goes into the studio, since signing with Deutsche Grammophon a decade ago he has curated an acclaimed series of live recordings for the Yellow Label. The latest of these was captured at two recitals he gave in Spain last summer.

Grigory Sokolov – Purcell & Mozart is out today on all digital platforms with a 3-LP version to follow on 11 October. The full recital progamme will be premiered on STAGE+ on 12 October.

The first half of the album, presenting music by the 17th-century English composer Henry Purcell, was recorded at Sokolov’s recital at the Santander International Festival on 18 August 2023, as were the five encores that round off the programme. For his focus on Purcell, a composer new to his public performances, the artist wove together an uninterrupted sequence made up of three minor-key suites from A Choice Collection of Lessons for the Harpsichord or Spinnet, published a year after Purcell’s death, and six other short keyboard works.

With clarity of articulation and graceful ornamentation, Sokolov uses the versatility of the grand piano to bring out hidden nuances of the poised, elegant suites, which reveal how Purcell adapted the French and Italian styles of his day to create his own personal idiom. Then, as noted by Bachtrack in its review of the Aix-en-Provence recital, the pianist captures the different moods of the other pieces to perfection. “Ground in Gamut is carefree and lighthearted. In the Irish and Scotch Tunes the piano lives and laughs, by turns bucolic and tenderly melancholy, while Sokolov’s dynamic touch brings nobility and a sense of momentum to the Trumpet Tune.”

The Salzburg Recital

Legendary Pianist Grigory Sokolov Releases His First Album in Almost Twenty Years. New album features critically acclaimed 2008 Salzburg Festival Recital and is the pianist's first release as an exclusive Deutsche Grammophon recording artist. This recital, given in 2008 at the Salzburg Festival, amply demonstrates the distinctive nature of Sokolov's artistry, featuring repertoire from Rameau onwards. The program begins with two particularly beautiful Mozart sonatas in F major K 280 with its dark-hued central siciliano movement, and the brilliant and tender K 332 – both played with Sokolov's habitual care, intensity and wealth of characterization. The second half consists of Chopin's 24 Préludes op. 28, traversing an extraordinary spectrum of color and concept even within those pieces that last less than a minute.

Schubert | Beethoven

"With a piano giant like Sokolov, it's hard to keep enthusiasm bottled." - The Times

Grigory Sokolov is recognized as a titan among classical musicians. The Russian pianist's interpretative insights and visionary musicianship arise from absolute dedication to his art and total immersion in every piece he performs. His Deutsche Grammophon debut album of works by Mozart and Chopin, The Salzburg Recital, ended an extended period during which he issued no new recordings. It drew worldwide critical acclaim, received a coveted ECHO Klassik Award, and became one of the Yellow Label's best-selling core classical titles of 2015. Sokolov's new album, to be issued a year after the first, is poised to join its predecessor as a major landmark of the piano catalogue. Sokolov: Schubert/Beethoven, scheduled for release on January 29, 2016, confirms why audiences are prepared to queue overnight for a chance to hear the maestro's peerless artistry.

Grigory Sokolov:

Beethoven * Brahms

Typically, one half of a Sokolov programme enters his concert repertoire in October, the other half in February. He takes no advice and brooks no discussion when planning it: his choices are directed simply by what he happens to find most interesting and suitable. The only way to find out how and why he compiled this programme of early and late Beethoven – the Sonata op. 2 no. 3 and the Bagatelles op. 119 – and two sets of late Brahms pieces is to listen to it. He is not going to reveal anything in words. Anyone familiar with his recitals, however, will know that no two performances of the same repertoire are ever quite alike.

MOZART RACHMANINOV CONCERTOS - LIVE

Sokolov's live recordings of Mozart and Rachmaninov's concertos, set for release on 10 March 2017, are not "new" in chronological terms. But they are fresh and likely to remain so, no matter how many times we hear them. The Mozart was made at the 2005 Salzburg Mozart Week and the Rachmaninov dates from a decade earlier, recorded at the Royal Albert Hall during the centenary season of the BBC Proms. "Such is his intensity that Sokolov carries everything and everyone along with him," observed the Salzburger Nachrichten in response to the pianist's reading of K488. TheLondonTimes was equally moved by his account of Rachmaninov's fiendishly difficult Third Concerto, which Sokolov "swept through…like a hurricane." The Independent responded by celebrating "an outstanding performance" by "a major pianistic force."
