Russia's most spectacular film project - DAU features Teodor Currentzis / The Moscow Times
At the end of January, parts of what is surely Russia's most spectacular film project premiered in Paris. The project - something between a film series and an extended social and psychological experiment - is called "DAU" and directed by Ilya Khrzhanovsky, a filmmaker with only one major work before this project. It is based, in part, on the life of the Soviet scientist Lev Landau, here played by the cla...

In his first prom, Teodor Currentzis pushes MusicAeterna in Beethoven. A sound as radical as when new / The Guardian
Teodor Currentzis stalks on to the Albert Hall stage during Prom 18, kisses MusicAeterna's leader, raises his arms, and … what do we hear? Beethoven. If you believed everything you read about Currentzis, the fact that we can instantly recognise the composer may come as a surprise. So much is made of his maverick nature, not to mention his fondness for making grand, mysterious statements ("I am a p...
GRAMOPHONE congrats Teodor Currentzis & Igor Levit
Last issue's Recording of the Month was an extraordinary release by conductor Teodor Currentzis of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No 6, the Pathétique. A musician who single-mindedly sets out to reconsider how music – whether orchestral or opera – should be heard and recorded, it's no surprise that he's also a collaborator of Kopatchinskaja's. What unites them both is just how strongly they em...

A large number of classical CDs were released in 2016, of which I only heard a small fraction. Many people continue to prefer discs, but others, mainly young people, have switched to more contemporary media, notably streaming and YouTube. The immediate question is what a reviewer should focus on. As the streaming sites are basically organized in a format of albums, a CD review enables the reader to look ...

Teodor Currentzis | MusicAeterna - Mozart: The Marriage of Figaro is CBC Music 'First Play'
Teodor Currentzis is a perfectionist to the point of obsession, which isn't such a bad quality for a conductor to have. The Greek-born conductor and his Russia-based MusicAeterna ensemble have recorded Mozart's entire The Marriage of Figaro opera with an unprecedented attention to detail. Currentzis carefully controlled every corner of this recording, from finding the perfect acoust...
