Summer Night Concert 2017

Summer Night Concert 2017: The Vienna Philharmonic with Christoph Eschenbach & Renée Fleming

Sony Classical is proud to announce the release of this year's Vienna Philharmonic Summer Night Concert Schönbrunn 2017, conducted by Christoph Eschenbach with soprano Renée Fleming as soloist.

The Summer Night Concert, performed this year on May 25th 2017, is an annual open-air event, which has been held since 2008. The previous series was the "Concert for Europe", which took place from 2004 until 2007. The park of Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna/Austria is the magical setting for the concert, which is free of charge for all residents and visitors of the city. The illustrious conductors who have previously led the orchestra at this event are Georges Prêtre, Daniel Barenboim, Franz Welser-Möst, Valery Gergiev, Gustavo Dudamel, Lorin Maazel, Christoph Eschenbach, Zubin Mehta and Semyon Bychkov.

Thanks to its UNESCO World Heritage setting in the Baroque park of Schönbrunn with the palace as a backdrop, the Summer Night Concert adds great visual charm to its superb musical quality. This event is classical music at its very best – made accessible to a broad public. Millions of viewers and listeners in more than 80 countries can follow the concert online, on TV and radio, and up to 100,000 Viennese and their guests assemble on the Great Parterre at the heart of Schönbrunn Park for the event.

Central to the Vienna Philharmonic's 2017 Summer Night Concert are German, French, Russian and Czech fairytales as well as a contemporary fantasy figure that is Anglo-Saxon in origin. Fairytales and myths have inspired composers from time immemorial, and audiences, too, have invariably been enthralled by the unending struggle between good and evil.

Performed for the first time in front of Schönbrunn Palace, the concert is conducted by Christoph Eschenbach, who is returning for his second such concert. His first was in 2014. Christoph Eschenbach, one of the most distinguished musicians of our time, is in demand as a guest conductor for prominent orchestras and opera houses worldwide. Since 2010 he has been musical director of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington D.C.  Having begun his career as a pianist, he learned conducting under George Szell and Herbert von Karajan. Since making his debut as a conductor in 1972, he has led renowned orchestras, including the Tonhalle-Orchester in Zurich, the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre de Paris and the Philadelphia Orchestra. His repertoire ranges from J. S. Bach to contemporary music.

Renée Fleming is one of the most acclaimed singers of our time. At a White House ceremony in 2013, the President awarded her the National Medal of Arts, America's highest honor for an individual artist.

Winner of the 2013 Grammy Award - her fourth - for Best Classical Vocal Solo, Ms Fleming has sung for momentous occasions. From the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize ceremony to the 2012 Diamond Jubilee Concert for Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace. In addition, she brought her voice to a vast new audience as the first classical artist to sing the National Anthem at the 2014 Super Bowl. A ground-breaking distinction came in 2008 when Ms Fleming became the first woman in the 125-year history of the Metropolitan Opera to solo headline an opening night gala.

The 175-year old tradition of the Vienna Philharmonic goes back to 1842, when Otto Nicolai conducted a Grand Concert with all members of the imperial "Hof-Operntheater". This event was originally called "Philharmonic Academy" and is regarded as the origin of the orchestra. Since its founding, the orchestra has been managed by the administrative committee – a democratically elected body – and works with artistic, organisational and financial autonomy. All decisions are reached on a democratic basis during the general meeting of all members.

Sony Classical will release the unique concert experience on CD August 1, and will release the full convert on DVD, Blu-ray as well as digitally on August 11.
