Recording of Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor, op, 11 by Bruce Liu, the stunning winner of the latest Chopin Competition, together with the Warsaw Philharmonic. Together with the CD released by Deutsche Grammophon in November by agreement with the Chopin Institute, it is a remarkable and complete document of Bruce (Xiaoyu) Liu’s triumphant road to victory in one of the most important music competitions.

The phonographic chronicling of a music event, and especially a competition, is always a very special undertaking. It is not just the magic of reliving past events and capturing fleeting moments, but also evoking incredible emotions, changing fortunes and a moment when history is being written. At the Chopin Competition in Warsaw, we have been witnessing the emergence of stars of global pianism for almost 100 years. Victors, prize-winners and others who have made a great impression but failed to pick up II prize - there have been so many great names, illustrious figures in the musical world. Recordings of competition performances represent a fascinating document of their early musical sensibilities, the artistic choices that launched their careers, their youthful-although often already mature--virtuosity; re-listing them immediately after the Competition, or even years or decades later, we relish the performances, full of wonder perhaps (how intriguing such wonderment is!), admiring and rediscovering interpretations that were widely discussed at the time.

There is a splendid tradition to the competition chronicle; its latest manifestation is the Blue Series of recordings released by the Fryderyk Chopin Institute, in which, since 2010, we have been presenting portraits of the most interesting personalities of the Chopin Competition and selected archival recordings. October 2021 in Warsaw was a time of outstanding pianism and the general consensus was that it was one of the best ever competition, in which we had the good fortune to encounter an exceptionally large number of fantastically gifted virtuosos. It is a great joy to listen to these young artists fascinated by the music of Chopin, drawing genuine pleasure from it, regardless of the stress surrounding the competition. It is with great pleasure and satisfaction that we share our recordings of those beautiful encounters with you. - STANISLAW LESZCZYSKI
